Frozen Shoulder

Frozen Shoulder

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder is a condition which causes stiffness and pain in your shoulder joint. You may have an increased risk of developing frozen shoulder if you’re recovering from a medical condition or procedure that prevents you from moving your arm. Signs and symptoms typically appear gradually and worsen over time before resolving within one to three years.

The three stages of frozen shoulder are:

● Freezing stage. Any movement of your shoulder causes pain, and your shoulder’s range of motion starts to become limited.

● Frozen stage. Pain may begin to diminish during this stage. However, your shoulder becomes stiffer, and using it becomes more difficult.

● Thawing stage. The range of motion in your shoulder begins to improve.

What causes a frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder occurs when the capsule of connective tissue, which encases your shoulder’s bones, ligaments and tendons, thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint and restricts its movement. You may be at higher risk for developing frozen shoulder if you’re 40 and older, have reduced mobility or have a systematic disease such as diabetes.

Can frozen shoulder recur in the same shoulder?

It’s unusual for the same shoulder to develop frozen shoulder, but in some cases, people have developed this condition in their opposite shoulder.

How is frozen shoulder treated?

Treatment options for frozen shoulder may include range-of-motion exercises, corticosteroids, numbing medications or, in a small percentage of cases, arthroscopic surgery.
